My Australian Experience

Your Ultimate Guide to Visiting Australia: A Journey from the USA to the Land Down Under

When an invitation to visit Australia was extended by a friend, there was initial apprehension on my part. Although Australia had been on my travel bucket list, it wasn’t prioritized for 2023. However, plans were made, and the decision to embark on the journey turned out to be one of the best choices.

The Long Journey to Australia

The journey to Australia is lengthy, but careful planning can make it manageable. My flight was initiated from Columbia, SC, with a layover in Atlanta, GA. From there, a flight was taken to Los Angeles, where a nearly three-hour layover was endured before the 14-hour nonstop flight to Sydney commenced. Fortunately, long flights had already been experienced through previous trips to South Africa and Egypt, so it wasn’t unfamiliar.

Upon arrival in Sydney, a domestic flight to Cairns lasting three hours was boarded. Although the trip was long, the adventure and beauty of Australia made every minute worthwhile.

Entry Requirements for US Travelers

Before arrival in Australia, the Australian ETA app was required to be downloaded. This app, necessary for US citizens, is where a visa application is completed. Approval was granted instantly. It should be noted that flight check-in isn’t possible without a visa, so obtaining this ahead of time is important.

What to Expect in Australia

Language: English is spoken as the official language, ensuring easy communication for travelers.

Currency: The Australian Dollar (AUD) is used, and it’s important to note that US Dollars are not accepted.

Credit Cards: Credit cards are widely accepted in most establishments, and ATMs can be found throughout the country for easy access to cash.

Plugs and Voltage: Type I plugs and a voltage of 230V are used in Australia, so travelers are advised to bring a universal adapter with surge protection.

Safety: Australia is known for its safety, boasting a low crime rate. However, awareness of wildlife, including poisonous spiders, snakes, and occasional sharks, is recommended.

Best Time to Visit: My visit occurred in October, with pleasant weather conditions. Australia’s seasons are opposite those in the US, so summer runs from December to February. Depending on the activities and regions of interest, different seasons may be more suitable. For those visiting the Great Barrier Reef, spring and summer months are ideal.

Cairns: Gateway to Adventure

Upon arriving in Cairns, a stay at the Crystalbrook Riley Hotel was arranged for three nights. Located just 10 minutes from the airport, the hotel provided a convenient and comfortable start to the trip, with breakfast included in the stay.

Cairns, situated off the coast of North Queensland, is considered one of Australia’s premier destinations. Access to the Great Barrier Reef was easily obtained, making it a perfect location for outdoor activities. During the stay, Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures was visited, offering the chance to witness live crocodile feedings and see the Aussie Big 5. The lively night markets provided a fun and unique shopping experience as well.

Sydney: A City of Charm and Adventure

The next stop was Sydney, where accommodations were provided at the Park Hyatt Hotel in the historic Rocks district. Each morning offered views of the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and a new cruise ship docking at the port.

Sydney is celebrated for its stunning harbor and vibrant culture. Many ways to explore the harbor are available, including ferries, cruise ships, high-speed jet boats, or sea kayaks. The historic Rocks area, with its sandstone warehouses and Victorian merchants’ houses, was explored, where art galleries, boutiques, cafes, and weekend markets could be found.

A stroll across the Sydney Harbour Bridge and a visit to the Sydney Tower Eye were highlights of the trip, offering panoramic views of the city. Sydney is a dynamic city, and its many attractions ensure an exciting and diverse experience for any traveler.

Australia: A Bucket List Destination Worth Visiting

Though Australia was not initially at the top of my list, the decision to visit was one of the best travel experiences ever. The kindness and friendliness of the Australian people were felt everywhere, and although not many Black Americans were encountered, safety and comfort were never an issue.
